About  Swachh Bharat Mission

The Government of India has launched Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October, 2014 which needs to become a mass movement to Clean India by 2nd October, 2019 as a befitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary. Under this Mission, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation & Ministry of Urban Development have issued detailed guidelines for Swachh Mission Rural and Urban respectively.

The Government shall provide physical infrastructure under the Scheme that includes, Individual Household Latrine, Public Toilets and School Toilets to address the problem of open defecation in our cities and villages. Plus systems for Solid and Liquid Waste Management is to be established.

Scientific processing of waste with the mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle is the underlining approach of the Swachh Mission. For this approach turning waste into organic compost is seen as a solution with an added economic benefit.

Public participation is sought in the form of voluntary participation/contribution, NGO involvement, Corporate Social Responsibility and most importantly behavioral changes in the public to catalyze the success of the mission.

A State Mission Directorate has been formed at The Urban Development and Housing Development Dept., Govt. of Sikkim to execute the mission in Sikkim. The Directorate will be assisted by a Project Mission Unit, to whom the work is outsourced.

The mission shall focus at the 7 Urban Local Bodies of Sikkim state.
